History of the ISL

More than 50 years ago, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) was founded in Bremen. Combining tradition with modern research, we have since positioned ourselves as one of the Europeanwide leading institutes in maritime research, consultancy and know-how transfer.

Milestones
1954 Formation as an independent, private, non-profit foundation under the name of Institute of Shipping Research with the aim to promote and advance shipping research.
Founder and first director: Dr. Gustav Adolf Theel.
He realised the comprehensive shipping library, which is still one of the institutes essential trademarks.
1959 First edition of the Shipping Statistics and the Shipping Yearbook (which has been generated from the World Shipping Archive).
1967 Change of the Institutes name to Institute of Shipping Economics. The Institute has now been assigned to the Senate of Education, Sciences, and Arts.
1970 - 1976 Organisation of shipping seminars abroad (e.g. in. India).
Development and expansion of cooperations with other institutes and universities.
1982 Formation of the Sponsoring Body of the Institute of Shipping Economics by representatives of the maritime industry. The members encourage the scientific maritime research of the Institute with ideological and substantial support.
1980 Expansion of the fields of activities of the Institute, e.g. involvement of logistics systems (Hinterland transport) as well as the compilation of transport chains.
Expansion of the Institutes name to Institute of shipping Economics and logistics. The orientation of the Institutes activities now includes Telematics and Logistics.
1984 Expansion of the Institutes name to Institute of shipping Economics and logistics. The orientation of the Institutes activities now includes Telematics and Logistics.
1985 For the first time, the monthly ISL Shipping Statistics and Market Review is produced computer-assisted (Lloyds fleet database).
1986 Start of the computer-aided literature documentation ISL SEABASE.
1987 The first R&D project within the European Commission framework aid program.
1988 Initiation of a new ordinance and change of the Institutes name into Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics.
1989 After severalelocations (Hollerallee, Werderstraße and Börsenhof) the Institute moves into Universitaetsallee
1989 Foundation of the Scientific Advisory Board. It consists of representatives from science and practice, advises ISL in research and development areas and contributes substantially to the practice-oriented aims of ISLs development strategies.
1994

The Institute arranges its activities in three departments, accordant to the reorientation, with the names business economics, transport and telematics.

The monthly ISL Shipping Statistics and Market Review receives a new conceptional design with a stronger focus on focal themes and market comments.

1997 Foundation of the branch office in Bremerhaven.
2000 Foundation of the ISL Baltic Consult, Luebeck under the participation of Luebeck Port Authority.
2003 In the course of location expansion in Bremerhaven, this branch office became the fourth department of ISL.
Names of the four departments are now:
  • Logistic Systems
  • Maritime Economics and Transport
  • Information Logistics
  • Planning and Simulation Systems.
2004

In 2004, ISL intensifies its competences concerning maritime market research, logistics, and eBusiness.

In October, ISL celebrates its 50 years anniversary with a Senate Reception at Bremen Townhall and a workshop at the Congress Centre Bremen. Patron is Mayor Dr. Henning Scherf.

2005

ISL focussing on Maritime Logistics.
The European Intermodal Transport Promotion Centre Bremen is inaugurated at ISL Bremen.

The ISL Shipping Statistics and Market Review is available online.

2006 New location for ISL in Bremerhaven at t.i.m.e.Port II
2007

Change in chairmanship in the Board of Directors: Prof. Dr. Hans-Dietrich Haasis detached Prof. Dr. Manfred Zachcial as chairman of the board of directors.

Bundling of IT-related research and development activities of ISL in Bremen and Bremerhaven in the adjusted department Information Logistics.

The competence areas "Auto-ID and security in container transport" and "Optimisation and Simulation" are located in Bremerhaven
