ISL in profile
More than 50 years ago, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) was founded in Bremen. Combining tradition with modern research, we have since positioned ourselves as one of the Europeanwide leading institutes in maritime research, consultancy and know-how transfer.
On location in Bremen, Bremerhaven and Luebeck, about 50 employees work in interdisciplinary teams on projects from all over the world. Whether in China, Saudi-Arabia or Russia, be it logistics systems, maritime economics and transport or information logistics - on behalf of our partners from the public and private sector at home and abroad we arrange for innovative ideas to become practical solutions.
Solutions for the Future
The department of Logistics Systems seizes suggestions concerning the future of logistics for our customers.
Our core competences are:
- Corporate system integration of intermodal transport
- Configuration of synergetic regional networks
- Process-oriented creation of sustainable business models
- Controlling of knowledge and cooperation
In intensive exchange with experts from all over the world, we offer a broad service package to our clients. For the development of the "Freight Transport and Logistics Masterplan", even the Federal Government does resort to ISL know-how.
The focal points of our work are in these areas:
- Intermodality
- Knowledge management
- Regional logistics
- Sustainable systems in production and logistics
Facts and Analyses for Economy and Politics
Our department Maritime Economics and Transport consults politics and economy on the basis of analyses, forecasts and examination of influencing factors and cause-effect relationships in the field of shipping, ports and shipbuilding. Furthermore, the ISL experts analyse and develop quantitative approaches to transport modelling.
Among the central services count:
- Market analyses and evaluation
- Creation of politically relevant analyses
- Forecasts
- Transport planning and modelling
Innovations for Transport Economics
The department of Information Logistics offers competent services, products and innovative research via studies and R&D projects in the field of information and simulation technologies for the transport area. Our experts combine their knowledge of transport and logistical processes with efficient project management and IT experience.
We support our clients from process analysis to software maintenance in all project stages and conduct all projects customer-oriented and on the basis of well established methods and procedures.
Our focal points:
- Process optimisation via new technologies
- Cooperation along the transport chain via the integration of IT systems
- Innovative IT systems for the planning and monitoring of intermodal transport chains (inhouse, web)
- Quantitative methods for the assistance of planning and optimisation
Two special development competence areas are located at Bremerhaven:
- The competence centre "Optimisation and Simulation" with the development of tools and the implementation of consulting projects for ports, intermodal train terminals, and handling installations. Examples are the simulation of transport lines to avoid bottlenecks, methods and tools for terminal capacity planning, models for optimisation of port entrance strategies, simulation of goods flows in multimodal nets as well as mathematical optimisation and the animated 3D-visualisation of logistical processes.
- The competence centre "Auto-ID and Security in Container Transport" concentrates on the design of concepts as well as the development of pilot projects for the implementation of automatic identification systems and their connection to business and EDI processes, e.g. for container turnover, as well as for the building of surveying systems of intermodal chains for the purpose of logistics and security.
