The startingpoint for the Wisdom project is a very broad goal: "a substantial contribution to the improvement of the multimodal transport chain, by datasharing in an open system". The Wisdom project as defined now contains two pilots (Rotterdam and Bremen/Hamburg) and some supporting activities, like architecture, quantitative modeling, human factor and market research. The first step of the Wisdom project is to narrow this goal to a realistic target for both pilots. The userrequirements report describes the result.
The Rotterdam pilot focuses on the integration of the transportchain between the Rotterdam harbor and the inland customer. The main benefit is foreseen in the equipment management: "Do more with less containers". Other benefits are in the administration: minimizing the work and quicker more reliable documents. The Rotterdam pilot system is based on a common database, which has connections to local user systems. It also can be used as a common system with terminals connected to the database. Connections are foreseen with ordermanagement, transport planning (of the inland operators) and terminal control. Users in the system can only retrieve data which they need for their role in the transportchain.
The Bremen/Hamburg pilot focuses on improvement of the co-operation in the port area. The main benefit foreseen is minimizing waiting times and avoiding empty transports. Also benefits in the administration are foreseen: reduction of printing and communication costs. The Bremen/Hamburg pilot is based on connecting the partners with EDI by an open and flexible tool. Three scenarios are planned: equipment control which communicates the status data of the transportmeans, operation control which connects the terminal and the trucker and order control which connects the forwarder role with the trucker.
