Based on a robust y-o-y fleet growth of 14.1 %, China has topped Japan for the first time and is now the second-largest ship-owning nation, controlling a fleet of more than 5,600 vessels, totalling a capacity of 270 million dwt.
Japan, the third largest economic power in the world, is extremely dependent on its seaborne foreign trade. The development of cargo handling in its ports is therefore a particularly sensitive indicator of the development of the Japanese economy, which shows the effects of the weakening global economy and trade conflicts.
