Maritime Transport Chains

ISL provides extensive knowledge about maritime logistics chains and independent views on economic and technology developments and trends.

We provide our partners of shipping economics and logistics with individual customized know-how. Based on this seaward and landward port inbound control can be optimized. We develop logistic concepts for goods with special demands like controlled temperature, project logistics (High & Heavy and Offshore Wind Farm logistics) or raw material logistics, for example bioenergy production.

Seaward and landward port inbound processes

ISL offers its partners access to optimizing concepts concerning seaward as landward port inbound processes with seaport as central hub. In our concepts we include road and all other means of transportation such as railway, inland waterways, short-sea traffic or combined freight transport.

IT-systems for HGV notification for terminal operators can optimize the HGV inbound traffic of big ports like Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Wilhelmshaven. Peaks of inward as outward HGV traffic have a strong impact on the public traffic infrastructure causing congestions and increased noxious emissions.

Slot Management Systems are helpful but so far do not exist in German north range ports. Haulage firms and terminal operators depend on each other. Slot Management requires a contractual basis of these two parties.

Peaks of inward and outward HGV traffic cause latency at terminal gates, transfer points or customs resulting in losings for the haulage firm up to lost assignments; waiting time is no rest period for the driver due to German law .

In search of constant use of capacities the peaks cause shortage for terminal equipment, staffing and material. Buffer ranges or the provision of central gates are planning options.

Transport of goods with special demands (special-needs-goods)

ISL has an excellent insight into the market of high and heavy goods and project logistics.

The market environment is difficult. Demands are high with e.g. just-in-time delivery at construction or production sites avoiding unnecessary capital lockup. We observe the early phase of market consolidation and continued weakness of the markets, which have reached - with some delay - the sector of project logistics, too. Our models include freight- and charter rates, oil price and demands as well as interest rate and redemption options in ship loans.

Further options are project shipments inside containers or on flat racks (like segments of wind turbines on cargo hold top or modular and container compatible design)

Multipurpose and heavy cargo shipping has the demand of shared resources, too, as e.g. with a fleet of 60 to 80 vessels one can accept orders without assignment to a specific vessel and its location. Digitalization achieves increasing importance in our projects based on our profound market knowledge and available models.
