Mega-Ship Impacts (OECD)

In spring 2015, under the auspices of the OECD, ISL investigated the economics and effects of a new generation of mega container ships with capacities of around 19,000 TEU. On the one hand it was determined whether the advantages of the new ships regarding efficiency were based solely on their size, or whether they are ultimately due to a paradigm shift in the branch (towards lower steaming speeds), and thus whether the importance of size is being overestimated. On the other hand, using a model developed by ISL, a forecast was made regarding how the cascade effect may further develop and if up to 100 vessels from an even larger generation (24,000 TEU) will enter service within the next five years. The publication from OECD, which emphasised the contribution of ISL, has thus provided high attention in the sector.
