Invited by the German Committee for Sustainability Research and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), experts from practice, research and science from the fields port management, ship operations and environmental research met in Hamburg on 12./13. March 2019 for an interdisciplinary forum on „Climate shipping pollution: piecemeal regulation for different objectives? Health, climate, environmental and socioeconomic implications and challenges for green shipping propulsion”. ISL was represented in Hamburg by Andreas Hübscher and Prof. Burkhard Lemper.
In the premises of the “Climate Campus” of the Hamburg University industry representatives and scientists in presentations dealt with a whole set of topics ranging from impact of ship emissions and air quality, the impact of shipping on the aquatic environment to the climate effects of shipping.
Furthermore, the invited experts together with the hosting organization discussed in interactive an interdisciplinary groups in depth on:
- Emission reduction regulations, technologies (using the example of waste gas scrubbers and LNG) and their consequences
- Air quality and health
- Climate impacts and perspectives for climate-neutral shipping
- Effects of ships on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
- Socio-economic drivers for green shipping
The ISL experts within the debates focused on including aspects of the economic reality, future economic trends and feasibility of the discussed approaches as solutions for the most important questions.
In final working groups, interdisciplinary research proposals on the questions from the first day were outlined:
- Toolbox for various technical approaches to achieve zero emission by 2050
- Development of a scalable sample ship with wide effect for duplication
- Kind of financing (according to Bases 2, CO2 certificates, bonus/malus, etc.)
- Do we need more SECA, e.g. generally in semi-enclosed seas or Arctic waters?
- Are SOx and NOx the right targets to regulate for improved public health or do we rather benefitting from indirect regulation of other pollutants, such as PM?
- Impact of the use of clean fuels and associated additional warming in the climate process
- Methanol - The future fuel?
The ISL is pleased to have enriched this event with its expertise and is open to subsequent research projects or other know-how transfer.
