Process change at port terminals due to truck platooning

Since the beginning of the year, the Kieserling Foundation has been funding a short study for concepts examining the use of truck platoons in seaport hinterland traffic, which was commissioned to ISL. The aim of this study is to analyse the effects of implementing truck platoons within German seaports, taking Bremerhaven as an example.

"Real" platoons, which are navigated by only one driver sitting in the first truck, must already be resolved at the terminal (e.g. on a possible pre-storage area). This means that for each truck, additional drivers would be needed in order to access their individual gate at the seaport. The same applies to the compilation of platoons.

Overall, the automation of processes within logistics chains has a significant potential for innovating the transport and logistics industry. Even though there is still need for research and development, there are already various pilot projects for truck platooning. Yet, there is only little information on how to assemble or separate platoons, which is essential for the success of the pilot projects.

The study carried out by ISL analyses the requirements for processes and information flows aiming to develop initial concepts for a holistically thought-out implementation. The project runs until the end of June 2022.
