Rail freight services play an increasingly important role in hinterland transport to and from the German seaports in both container and automotive logistics. Due to the large number of actors who are involved in the transport and handling processes, high coordination efforts are required. Although the data associated with these processes is already partially transmitted between certain participants, information deficits and disturbances in the processes still arise in daily operations. The limited capacities of the rail infrastructure in the ports aggravate the situation, which means that a more efficient use of existing resources is essential.

Together with its project partners, ISL is analysing the potential for an optimisation of the operations and the support of IT-based methods in the context of the project OPTIBAHN. The aim of OPTIBAHN is to provide the basis for reducing existing deficits and to establish a unified standardised data communication between stakeholders so that interferences in the operational processes can be reduced and a more efficient use of existing infrastructure can be achieved.
