Meet the Team – Flóra Gulyás

Through our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we continue to put the spotlight on the people behind the ISL. We offer personal insights into their career paths, their areas of expertise and what motivates them. This highlights who is helping to shape our projects and who, through their knowledge and commitment, shapes the ISL every day.

Today’s profile: Flóra Gulyás, an expert in the marine environment specialising in sustainable port management and ship emissions

How did you come to join ISL?

After completing my degree in Business IT in Hungary, I worked for several years as an IT consultant in Germany, supporting projects across various sectors, including the property sector and retail. When my daughter was born, I used my parental leave to complete my Master’s degree in Logistics.
Whilst I was subsequently reorienting my career, I came across the ISL’s job advertisement and applied straight away. My academic background and previous professional experience were a very good fit for the requirements – and that’s how I eventually became part of the ISL.

What does your work at the institute involve?

My work involves both leading and contributing to research and industry projects, as well as securing new projects. However, a particular focus for me is on my academic qualifications. My aim is to successfully complete my PhD and, in doing so, make my own academic contribution to the field of sustainable port management.

What do you like most about your work?

What I like most about my job is that I’m constantly learning. In my previous roles, I often felt that I’d eventually reach a point where I could no longer develop professionally. As a research assistant, it’s exactly the opposite: part of my role is to be open to new topics and to acquire new knowledge quickly.
What’s more, the work is very varied. It ranges from project management and developing solutions as part of a team to writing academic publications and attending conferences. I particularly value the freedom to contribute my own ideas and to help shape the professional direction in which I wish to develop.

Would you share a personal detail with us?

Sport has always been an important outlet for me and still helps me maintain a good balance in my everyday life. I’ve been playing basketball for over 25 years. In Hungary, I played in the 2nd Bundesliga; in Germany, in the Oberliga. As well as playing myself, I’ve been coaching children and adults for around eight years. That’s why I obtained my coaching qualification two years ago. I’ve now taken charge of my own team and am active there as a player-coach. Even though this role is often challenging, I find it fulfilling to pass on my experience, support others in their development and make progress together with the team.
