ISL - Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics was founded in Bremen in 1954. Combining tradition and modern science, we have since positioned ourselves as one of Europe's leading institutes for research, consulting and know-how transfer in maritime logistics.

ISL profile

Located in Bremen and since 1997, Bremerhaven, the Institute develops on behalf of public and private sector project partners/customers, practical solutions based on innovative ideas and works in interdisciplinary teams on projects from all over the world. 

In its seven areas of competence, ISL offers, among other things, market analyses and forecasts, organises application-oriented innovative funded projects related to maritime logistics, and develops as well as integrates IT systems.

History

The Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics

The ISL was founded on March 30, 1954 as the Institute for Maritime Research in the legal form of a non-profit foundation under private law with the purpose of conducting and promoting scientific maritime research. It emerged from the Foundation for the Promotion of the Establishment of an International University in Bremen, which had been established by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in June 1948.

The fields of competence are further optimised and complemented by two additional fields. The current fields of competence are now Maritime Markets, Maritime Security, Maritime Environment, Maritime Transport Chains, Simulation, Software Solutions and Digital Innovations.

The three departments will become 5 competence areas: Maritime Intelligence, Maritime Security, Maritime Environment, Maritime Transport Chains, Maritime Simulation.

The Board of Directors (replacing a single executive director) and the Board of Trustees (replacing the executive board) are introduced as new bodies of the Institute.

1984

In view of the expansion of general transportation, the areas of responsibility at the beginning of the 1980s cannot remain limited to maritime transportation.

The development of the economy requires the inclusion of hinterland transport, the coverage of the entire transport chains. So also the inclusion of logistic systems and information logistic approaches. Accordingly, the name of the institute in the statutes is extended to: Institute of Maritime Economics and Logistics. The activity orientation of the institute is supplemented by the areas "logistics" and "system analysis".

1982

Foundation of the "Förderkreis Stiftung Institut für Seeverkehrswirtschaft e.V." by well-known representatives of German shipping companies. The members support the scientific research of the institute both ideally and materially.

1967

In view of the changing tasks in the maritime industry, the name is changed to "Institute of Maritime Economics" in accordance with the articles of association.

The original statutory task of the foundation, namely "to conduct and promote scientific shipping research," is now interpreted as "scientific research in the field of maritime transport." The institute is now assigned to the Senator for Education, Science and the Arts.

1959

First edition of the "Jahrbuch der Schifffahrt - Shipping Statistics Yearbook", which is based on the "Bremer Jahrbuch der Weltschifffahrt" already published in 1953 and 1955 and is still published regularly today.

First issue of the monthly "Shipping Statistics and Market Review", which is still published regularly today.

On March 30, 1954, the "Institute for Maritime Research" was established as a non-profit foundation under private law by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Its statutory purpose is to conduct and promote scientific shipping research. The first director is Dr. Gustav Adolf Theel, the first board member is Dr. Ehrenfried Schütte. The advisory board initially consists of members of the Senate, later also of representatives of other institutions and the port industry. The supervisory authority is the Bremen Senator for Ports, Shipping and Transport.
