Port Fundamentals Course: An insight into the world of ports
We have just completed an exciting day of professional development focusing on ports, the maritime economy and global supply chains: at the first ISL ‘Port Fundamentals Course’, participants from the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), BIBA – the Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics – and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce came together to engage in an in-depth examination of the fundamentals and current developments in the port industry.
The overall aim of the one-day course is to foster a shared understanding of the diverse functions of ports, their role in global supply chains and the key developments shaping their future. Topics covered include the different types of ports, the factors influencing their competitiveness, and how they are organised and managed. Current technological, political and economic trends in the port and logistics sector are also part of the programme. The course further highlights the wide range of issues ports must address today and how closely they are linked to international flows of goods, logistics networks and economic developments. At the same time, it provides a foundation for better understanding the future development of ports and for devising strategic options for action.
The exchange with the participants was particularly enriching. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences gave rise to many interesting questions and discussions, which repeatedly drew direct parallels with real-world practice. It is precisely this exchange that makes the course such a varied and lively day of professional development.
