ISL at SMM 2026

At this year’s SMM — the world’s leading trade fair for the maritime industry, held in Hamburg — ISL participated in the joint stand of the German Federal State of Bremen, organized by BIS Bremerhaven. Together with our partners such as ttz Bremerhaven, LogDynamics, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik (BIBA), and others, the State of Bremen once again showcased its capabilities within the maritime sector.

With 50,000 participants from 134 nations and 2,300 exhibitors from 66 countries, Hamburg once again served as a key global hub for the maritime community. Intensive discussions regarding security, efficiency, and sustainability revealed a shift in current priorities. While decarbonizing the maritime industry remains a crucial strategic goal, security and resilience have increasingly moved into the spotlight. Thanks to its broad range of research activities, ISL is well-positioned to make constructive contributions to all these topics.

A highlight was the visit of Kristina Vogt, Bremen’s Senator of Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation, to the Bremen joint stand. She was accompanied by Department Head Hans-Georg Tschupke and Nils Schnorrenberger, Managing Director of BIS Bremerhaven. Friederike Fontes, Head of ISL’s Maritime Hydrogen research group, presented the institute’s current decarbonization projects, focusing in particular on the EU-funded H2B:IMPACT project, which is currently establishing Germany’s first EU-funded Hydrogen Valley in the State of Bremen.
