Meet the Team – Joelina Kremp

We are now entering the second round of our “Meet the Team” series, continuing to offer a personal insight into what makes our staff tick. From their career paths and areas of expertise to what drives them. This gives a clear picture of who is behind the projects and helping to shape the ISL.

Today’s profile: Joelina Kremp, an expert in Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis at the ISL.

How did you come to join ISL?

I studied geography and environmental modelling and came across the ISL about two years ago during my master’s internship, after which I stayed on as a student assistant. During that time, I immersed myself in the ISL’s geodata environment and was able to play an active role in its further development right from the start. After graduating, I finally started my career as a technical associate at the ISL and am involved in national and international projects.

What does your work at the institute involve?

My work is primarily based within the Maritime Markets division, where I contribute to a range of activities, including the ISL’s statistical publications. I am involved in managing the various comprehensive databases that serve as the foundation for these publications and are also used in project-specific analyses. In addition, creating maps and interactive dashboards is a regular part of my work, helping to present complex data in an accessible way and making spatial patterns visible at a glance.

What do you like most about your work?

What I appreciate most about my work at the ISL is the diversity of tasks, ranging from project meetings and data research to analytical work, all of which provide continuous learning opportunities. I am especially interested in addressing current sustainability issues in the maritime sector and exploring ways to make maritime processes more sustainable.

Would you share a personal detail with us?

Even in my free time, I am regularly drawn to the port – although usually from the water side of the quay. Sailing has been one of my hobbies for several years now and ties in with much of what I do professionally at the ISL. Through my work at the ISL, I’ve also developed a much better understanding of maritime logistics, port processes and maritime transport operations. Conversely, the practical perspective from the water helps to make many aspects of my day-to-day work even more tangible.
