Research Area Maritime Hydrogen and PtX

The Maritime Hydrogen and PtX research group at ISL has more than thirteen years of experience in the analysis, evaluation, and development of hydrogen and Power-to-X applications in maritime and logistics contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of these energy carriers into port and transport infrastructures, as well as on the development of scalable maritime energy and fuel systems.

Application areas:

  • Decarbonisation of shipping through the use of alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic methanol
  • Hydrogen and Power-to-X applications in seaports and inland ports, for example for port vehicles, cargo handling equipment, and stationary energy supply
  • Integration of hydrogen into maritime and logistics supply chains, including transport, storage, and distribution
  • Production of hydrogen and PtX products in port regions, for instance through electrolysis and downstream synthesis processes
  • Application of hydrogen in hinterland logistics, including heavy-duty road transport, rail transport, and inland waterways shipping
  • Development of regional hydrogen ecosystems (Hydrogen Valleys) with a particular focus on port locations
  • Techno-economic assessments of hydrogen and Power-to-X value chains in maritime contexts

Furthermore, ISL is a full member of Hydrogen Europe Research, an international network comprising more than 150 universities and research organisations across 29 countries, dedicated to coordinating and advancing hydrogen research and innovation in Europe.
