Climate targets for maritime shipping hardly achievable

Shipping is still the most energy-efficient means of transport, but the pollutants it emits have a significant impact on the environment, the climate and ultimately on flora, fauna and people. One of the many environmental impacts is the emission of air pollutants. Reducing these environmental impacts has become increasingly important in recent decades. In this context, there have been and are numerous activities at international, European and national level to counteract these impacts on the environment.

The various regulations and measures have so far been relatively slow to get underway and the progress made is currently lagging behind the required paths of the targets and voluntary commitments - despite all the high-profile investments and measures at the level of various large and small players.

The issue of the availability of alternative fuels in particular is essential for the prospects of success of climate protection efforts and goals. There are also significant deficits here, which, among other things, also hinder shipping's investments in climate-friendly technologies. Therefore, the production capacities for green hydrogen as the basis for the production of alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia must be expanded quickly in order to meet demand in a timely manner. In any case, national, European and international politicians are called upon to create appropriate framework conditions and investment incentives.

The ISL's position on climate-friendly shipping can be found in the current position paper " Climate targets for maritime shipping are hardly achievable". You can download this after you have filled in the details below.
