The ISL at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo 2025

From October 21 to 23, 2025, ISL was represented at the Hydrogen Technology World Expo (HTWE) at the Hamburg Messe – according to its own statements, “the world's premier hydrogen-focused event.” This year, ISL Managing Director Prof. Dr. Nils Meyer-Larsen represented the institute on site.

The HTWE brings together key players from industry, science, and politics to discuss current developments along the entire hydrogen value chain.

Hydrogen plays a crucial role in global defossilization, especially in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as shipping and aviation. Accordingly, this year's focus was once again on the use of hydrogen and its derivatives for maritime propulsion and applications in port logistics.

In a conversation with Bremen's State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Maike Frese, Prof. Meyer-Larsen presented the ISL's current activities in the field of hydrogen technologies, including SeaEly for direct seawater electrolysis, North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports to support European ports in establishing a hydrogen economy, and MariSynFuel for green methanol as a marine fuel. In numerous discussions with experts and partners, the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen use in the maritime industry were discussed in depth.

One highlight was our joint appearance with ttz Bremerhaven. A big thank you for the excellent cooperation! Our joint presence demonstrated how strongly cooperation between research partners drives innovation in the hydrogen sector.

Participation in HTWE 2025 has once again made it clear that the path to more sustainable shipping will be significantly shaped by innovative hydrogen technologies. The ISL looks forward to continuing to research these solutions together with our partners and putting them into practice.
